Tax Office Conducting In-Person Events to Help Property Owners before July Deadline

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett announces the county’s third annual Property Tax Assistance Week recently recognized for the beneficial services it provides property owners by Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey at Commissioners Court.

In an effort to help property owners with unpaid property tax balances, the Tax Office is conducting free in-person property tax assistance events to explain to property owners how they may enter into property tax payment agreements before the July 1, 2024, deadline. Property tax experts from the Harris County Central Appraisal District (HCAD) and the Harris County Attorney’s Office will join Tax Office staff to provide property owners with personalized assistance.

The deadline is normally June 30 per the state’s tax code, but since the day falls on a Sunday, property owners have until July 1 to enter into a payment agreement.

“The Tax Office has mailed out over 100,000 past due property tax notices to property owners with unpaid property taxes, encouraging those property owners to enter into a payment plan,” said Bennett. “A payment plan will still incur the accrual of penalty and interest. However, it will help prevent past due accounts from being turned over to collection attorneys and possibly assessed additional fees and potential legal collection action.”

Most delinquent property tax accounts sent to collection on July 2, 2024, may be subject to an additional 15-20% in attorney's fees. Property owners whose accounts remain delinquent could ultimately face lawsuits for unpaid property taxes and incur additional costs and fees.

The July 1, 2024, deadline is the last day before the turnover of past-due property tax accounts and the deadline for paying in full or entering into a payment plan agreement and making the first payment.

Tax Office property tax experts will help property owners with the following:

Installment payment plans range from 12 to 36 months. All payments must be received by the due date specified in the payment agreement, and the balance must be paid off by the deadline stated in the contract. The first payment is due at the time the payment plan starts.

Requests for an installment payment plan may be made through the Harris County Tax Office website at www.hctax.net, by phone at 713-274-8000, or by email at installmentpaymentplan@tax.hctx.net, by fax at 713-368-2219, and by mail at P.O. Box 4663, Houston, TX, 77210-4663.
